Strike Up The Band

Thursday 2 July 2009

In a year in which OSF is putting on a really good production of The Music Man, it seems appropriate to spend some space on Ashland’s own town band, the Ashland City Band.

The Ashland City Band has been in business, in one incarnation or another, since the last 1800s. The current band has three members who have been with it over fifty years each, so there’s some serious staying-power there.

The program is bookended with pure Americana. Every performance leads off with Strike Up the Band and The Star Spangled Banner, and closes with Sousa piece. In between is anything from Frank Sinatra to Richard Wagner, Cole Porter to Hank Williams.

Tonight the band performed some marches, some swing, a little classical, and a little from the “other” bin. A good time was had by all.
