Almost Kings is a coming-of-age story loosely based on the novelist’s experiences at Ashland High School, but it’s not biographical. To wit:

Ted’s crippled and alcoholic father is the weight around his young life. Ted idolizes his older brother, nicknamed Truck, so much so that he will do just about anything to get into his brother’s clique of older friends at high school. Ted’s girlfriend (maybe), Kallea,

Older viewers will find some of the high school reminisces merely disturbing. Younger, more recent grads may see themselves or their friends in Truck and his beer-drinking, football-playing friends, or in Ted and his quiz-bowl crowd. Whether you were “in” or “out” at high school, you will likely see people you remember in the characters.

Solid 4.5 out of 5; highly recommended, especially if Silver Tongues is too intense for you.
